Looking for the next Plus Size Supermodel

Do you know any one who would be an incredible model but she doesnt really know it because she happends to be a size 10-16? Share with me who you feel would be a fierce example of a runway babe, cosmetics diva and all around great ambassador for the curvy side of fashion!

Calling all fierce, curvy supermodel types! If either you or you know someone who has what it takes to walk the catwalk in NYC, Europe and Asia or star in a national campaign of their own, I would love to know...send me a few photos and a paragraph explaining her fabulous traits.

Hi Emme...question for you:

Can you use a petite plus model? I'm 5'4", currently size 18. I did attend the local Barbizon classes and have a comp card, which is about 3 years old. I've gotten very little work from them, mostly county fairs at the Barbizon booth to bring them more business. Now it's hard to even get them to call back when I inquire about work.

I enjoyed the classes and learned a lot, now I would just like to use what I've learned! The whole reason I got into it in the first place was to inspire other plus size women to be more confident and accept themselves.

I know most agencies want someone at least 5'7", but I had heard there were starting to be more opportunities for petite plus. I think it would be a confidence booster to shorter women, so they don't think plus is only OK if you're tall!

So as for my traits...5'4", size 18 (but eating healthier,so the size may go down somewhat), blonde hair, blue eyes. I've been told I have a great smile! I want everyone to know that plus size women are not second class citizens!

Any guidance you could give would be appreciated...thanks!!!

Marie

Think the world is ready for a 5'3, blue-eyed, red headed plus size model, who-would definately shatter beauty perceptions because she has a few "beauty-marks" on her legs? Na-we know the world isnt ready for that, besides I do good to walk in sneakers! But I can dream because one day-I will be in a magazine alongside my hero!

I would be very interested in pursuing this dream of mine...I have no experience in modeling...but have a passion for fashion and all things fabulous! I would love your advice as to how to be the next up and coming and for sending a positive body image to people everywhere!

I hate to say it but height is an issue when you work as a model. Models who work consistantly are 5'8"-6'1". However, we can dream here! Size and height are not an issue.

I want to know why you want to be a supermodel? (need not join this chat if being a "supermodel" is all you want in life). Tell me about yourself or someone you know who should be acknowledged as a supermodel (inside and out) and why. Supermodel, supermom, superfriend, supersister, superaunt, superboss, superworker, superhot, superperson, superangel, supercool, you get my drift...supermodel in more ways than one.

I'm very interested to hear from you.

Hi Emme,

You are ABSOLUTELY 100% right in saying that there are multitudes of supermodel….I know plenty of women who have shaped that ideal in many facets of life! They are true queens and go beyond a label of mother, friend, grandmother or any other title that may be adopted by nature or even society….

In my eyes being a supermodel, especially those who are plus size supermodels, have a responsibility to promote beauty on ALL levels in a healthy way. At the same time taking action in their communities and educating people in the fashion world as well as their passions in life. It is a great platform to promote your favorite charities and using your experience as something to aide in your message.

I am 5’8” and a size 16 and have struggled with body image my entire life, as many women do! It has always been encouraged by loved ones and even sometimes strangers (which I always found odd) to pursue modeling. It started to plant ideas in my head that if I pursued this unknown medium it would offer opportunities to not only help with accepting myself as my own but to encourage women of all sizes to LOVE and ACCEPT themselves! I have multiple medical issues, Hypothyroidism and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, that make it difficult to lose weight…once the doctor’s discovered my diagnoses I was able to lose 100 lbs and gained confidence in myself. Not because I had lost a significant amount of weight, although that was part of it, but it was a journey of self-acceptance and loving me for ME! I believe you can be sexy at any size, but you have to BELIEVE it!

There is so much more to be said, but I know that are many women who have similar stories as mine…I want to thank you, Emme, for always being a strong and gorgeous role model for all ages on body image and self acceptance! Your commitment to use your celebrity as a positive motive for charity and educational involvement is something to TRULY be looked upon as something magnificent…

Warmest,

Meredith

Hi again!

I wonder if we could start a division for those of us who are under 5'8". I strongly believe that those of us on the shorter side need role models too.

On the acting side of that, we have Nikki Blonsky and Marissa Jaret Winokur, both of whom are under 5 feet tall. They also pose for photo spreads for magazines, so I suppose they would count as models as well. Now, they both also have the same type of "look" (as they both have played the same character), so I think someone like myself, who is Blonde/Caucasian, along with shorter women of all ethnicities, should be considered to be role models as well.

I know a lot of women and young girls who look up to Nikki and Marissa, for their size as well as their short stature. Nikki also is a spokesperson for the IGIGI clothing line.

I would love to encourage women and girls of all ages, who are inspired by someone who looks just like them. I have struggled withweight issues all my life, as well as health problems, but I always keep fighting for myself and others. I want to use my voice to make a difference. And since I'm learning to do healthier things, I can advocate for eating what's good for you, not junk because you're larger and think you can get away with it.

I also have been told I should model, and have pursued it locally, but I'm looking for more opportunites to spread the message. Most people I come across have never understood why only tall people should be role models, since there are millions of us who don't fit that mold.

I would like to be one of the women to help break that mold...and inspire the girls and women of today!

I still believe we need the taller models, but count us shorter gals in too!

Thanks for being here and listening Emme!

Marie

When I was 17 I was voted Miss Drama Club for the Homecoming Coronation for my high school. Had I not been somewhat popular in school, I would have thought it was a practical joke you see in the movies. "Let's vote for the least pretty, the nerd ect....Your typical stereotypes. I was still in shock because i wasnt what would be considered, "Homecoming material." I was 5'2, 200lbs and had severe 3rd degree burn scars from my waist down. I was given credit for shattering the beauty myths surrounding this type of pageant. That was my junior year. To test the "fluke" I competed my senior years as well and again was part of our schools homecoming ceremonies. That was the first time in my life I felt beautiful and didnt mind having my picture taken. After that, i began paying more attention to how I look, dressed and carried myself overall. Delta Burke was someone I admired and even when she gained weight, I thought she was just as talented and just as beautiful. Then in 1994, I saw a beautiful, curvy model in People magazines 50 most beautiful people issue. I was joyous because now here was someone, shattering the glass ceiling of beauty perceptions. She made me feel even more beautiful, like I could be that woman in the magazines too. I knew I was too short for modeling and I also know that alot of things would have to change before the world could handle a beautiful "scarred" model, so I do it my own way. I go have pictures done periodically and whenever I can-I put on my makeup, style my hair and wear my favorite shorts and walk through the burn unit. Thats my runway. It's not for the attention. The reward is having another burn survivor say that because I can wear shorts in public and let people see my scars, then maybe they can look at their scars, maybe they can let their family or spouse see thier scars and maybe now, they can let the world see their scars.

HI EMME,

I ALWAYS DREAMED TO BE PART OF A FASHION WORLD.MANY PEOPLE TOLD ME THAT I HAVE PERFECT FACE AND HEIGHT FOR MODELING BUT I ALWAYS FELT TOO BIG TO BE A MODEL.I AM 5'11 SIZE 10/12.WHAT DO YOU THINK?IS THERE A CHANCE FOR ME TO BE SUCCESFULL IN PLUS SIZE MODELING?

Supermom--and I can say that with supreme confidence because I have the three best/brightest/beautiful daughters in the universe.

Superwoman--because I am not controlled by fear: Going to college with my oldest daughter (who is so proud to say hi to her mom on campus!), confronting discrimination in a faith-based patriarchy, putting my money where my mouth is and working with victims of violence,

making friends with my 5'8.5 size 14 body that I have TODAY instead of waiting for that elusive moment when I lose 10 more lbs.

Experiencing the victory of my own self esteem battles when my daughters make "Fat-bottom Girls" the family theme song, cranking it up and dancing with their friends and this mom, all proud to be women!

Patchouli...I love it!!! My son and I were watching "Hairspray", and he told me that the song "Big, Blonde, and Beautiful" is me! So it looks like I have a theme song now!

You are an inspiration...keep up the good work!

Marie

Patchouli.. I love your spirit...Moms check this supermom out! continue celebrating your uniqueness and quality in life!! To health always!

It took me years to be a healthy me, which happens to be a bigger me. It has also been a long journey to confidence, which is something I continue to work on. One of the most powerful feelings of my life was walking down the runway in a beautiful wedding gown representing a bridal shop downtown. It is something that I would love to do again. Where do I send the pictures?

HI, I AM A 26 YEAR OLD MOTHER OF FOUR I LOVE BEING A MOTHER AND WATCHING THEM GROW AND LEARN I HAVE BEEN MARIIED FOR 7 YRS ON APRIL 4TH. WE HAVE 4 KIDS TOGETHER I MET MY HUSBAND ABOUT 10 YRS OLD WHEN I WAS VERY YOUNG AND LOST. HE SAVED ME FROM A LIFE OF LOST DREAMS AND ALOT O9F SORROW. WHEN WE MEET HE WAS A SINGLE FATHER RAISING A BOY AND A GIRL BY HIMSELF. HIS SON WAS 3 AND HIS DAUGHTER WAS 1 THE GREATEST KIDS IN THE WORLD UNFORTUNATELY THEIR MOM DIDN'T STICK AROUND LONG ENOUGH TO FIND OUT. SO, WHEN WE MET I NEEDED HIM AND HE NEEDED ME AND WE FELL IN LOVE FROM THERE AND THE REST IS HISTORY. NOW WE HAVE TWO OTHER BOYS TOGETHER 7 YRS OLD AND A 4 YR OLD I KNOW HOW CRAZY IS THAT A 10YEAR SPREAD. IT GETS PRETTY FUN AROUND OUR HOUSE AT TIMES. WELL, BACK TO THE REASON WHY I AM WRITING THIS IS TO TELL U ALITTLE BIT ABOUT ME AND HOW MY PASSION HAS ALWAYS BEEN MODELING BUT, I AM A BIG GIRL AND ALWAYS HAVE BEEN BUT, WOULD LOVE AND ENJOY THE CHANCE TO MODEL AND STAND FOR WHAT I BELEIVE TO BE A REAL WOMAN NOTHING AGAINST A SIZE 0 BUT, I WILL NEVER BE ONE. I AM 5'9 165-175 DEPENDING ON THE TIME OF THE MONTH LOL.. I CAN WEAR A 10 OR 14 DEPENDING ON THE CLOTHES. WELL, THAT'S ME WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU AND HAVE THE CHANCE TO MODEL HAVE ALSO WANTED TO I TRIED TO WHEN I WAS 14 BUT, GOT TURNED DOWN BUT, I WAS TO HEAVY OH WELL LIFE HAD SOMETHING BETTER IN STORE FOR ME THANKS FOR YOUR TIME TAUNYA

I think its great that finally its beginning to be okay, to be "plus size", but I hate how even the plus size models that they have in magazines still seem to be much smaller than I. Im 24 and a size 14, but to me I feel like I look much bigger than that...as I am sure most woman do. It would be nice to for once look in the mirror, and not feel ashamed of myself because society says i' m too fat.

Its frustrating that we live in a world where looks seem to be the most important thing. For instance the school teacher getting off for sleeping with her underage student because the judge said she was too pretty to serve time in jail.....really?

How fantastic is it to see our new Cover Girl and Americas Top Model be a curvy gal? Love it.

Oh my gosh! Emme, I was sooooo excited to watch Whitney win! I almost cried! Hahah ok maybe that is a bit of an overstatement, But I was really happy. About time?! And I am trying to be a plus sized model, the agencies in Pittsburgh aren't too into me. But I am trying none the less. I am 5'11, and currently (haha) as of this morning 189lbs, a size 14(ISH). I really want to model, and to change the fashion world. I want people to go back to the time where Marilyn Monroe was the perfect size. I also enjoy designing clothing. I'm so inspired in the Fashion industry ever since I was young. Clothing and fashion have always been my two passions. I have more of course, I love to do everything. I am very outgoing.. Ok why am I telling you my whole life story?? ANYWAYS, I want to be the next plus sized super model. -Mandy

Oh and your book- "True Beauty" was amazing. I am 19 and a college student, and a Division one rower!! ahah We have a lot in common, Emme your my inspiration.

my website is www.myspace.com/pinacoladatyme

Check it out. I have a nice paragraph about how proud I am to be myself.

Hey Emme, My name is Kala i'm a plus size 16/18 5'6 i Know I'm not exactly the standard height for a plus size model.. however i've always wanted to learn how to walk in high heels :) I don't have much experience in modeling at all, the only thing I have done was some in-store model shows for penningtons here in Toronto. It is honestly my dream to become a plus size model... I feel it will definitely raise my confidence and make others realize that plus size is also beautiful.

I've been big all my life ... however Ive worked my butt off for the past 4 years of my life to reach a size 16 .. In grade 9 I was a size 24 and when I went to go get my uniform for high school they had to special order me a pair of pants cause they didn't have a size big enough for me! Since then I've become very health conscience and very gym and outdoor active. I've lost 60 pounds and I now weigh 190 .. Im on my way down and my goal is a size 14. I feel that I would make a great plus size model because I have a true passion to show other women that being plus size is beautiful and just because we got those curves doesn't mean we should hold back physically and mentally but instead show everyone else what our curves can do!

Emme you are the perfect role model for that and I would absolutely love to follow in your foot steps!

Emme! I think I can be your next Plus Size Supermodel. To explain myself better, should I e-mail you?
