Meditation

we've been speaking about meditation a bit and felt that a few of us would like to speak more about our experiences. I was having my legs fall asleep and guess what? I changed my leg position and sit on a raised buckwheat pillow and just cross my legs instead of making my one foot go on top of the other, and i think I've solved the issue. After 30 minutes, I do need to bring one leg in for a stretch but go right back. I am glad to know that my practise (is that what you call it?) is one part of my life that is just for me. Special and unique to my growth as an individual. I find I have more patience and focus (two things I ask for). When I don't take the time to "go there" everyday, I feel like I've missed something. So much gets cleared away.

Hi Emme...I posted to Dorothy's blog but found you started this here.

I know very little about meditation but would like to know more. I know I need more focus, and with everything going on in my life (including my 9 year old son), I know I need more patience!!!

What time of day is best?

I love doing it in the morning...early before everyone gets up. Time just for me. I sometimes start with a couple of sun salutations (do you know what they are?) Yoga poses...stretches really. To get my body awake. I light a couple of candles because it just feels right to do this. I sit on a buckwheat pillow which has a lot of structure to it and can be mushed to fit your tush. (you know what I mean!) I sit cross legged and try to breathe slowly, eyes closed, I have a mini clock with an alarm on it (if you can find a gentle alarm the better) set it for 30 minutes or whatever time you can have... When I began, I had no patience, my mind kept racing, and i couldn't relax. It does take some practise to have things start to fall into place... I am now getting to an hour and it feels that i am just getting into a nice peaceful place and my alarm goes off. I try not to say how badly I do it, taking so long to get to a nice flow to have it end so quickly...time really goes at different pace when you do this... It just means you are in a good flow and enjoying it. Never in a million years would I think I would be doing it. Oh, my body temperature goes down so I would have a blanket near you to put on your shoulders. I also keep my hands cupped in my lap, my thumbs touching making a circle. If you can pick up a guided meditation cd, a chakra balancing cd, or soft soothing music those are nice complements to your practise. Today i had total silence. Other days, I need some help. I just picked up Soothing Time for Moms fromMy Yoga Land excellent cd!!!

i started by joining a meditation group, there are several that people host in their own homes, and even just having one other person present sometimes help in the focus...

i did a 10 day vipassana meditation retreat a few years ago, and if you google that, you'll find so many places that teach and host, free.

what i learned there, was that people first and formost had to sit comfortably, whether in a chair, or on bunches of pillows, some people were completely covered in blankets. and your body will undoubtably tingle and legs will fall asleep, but then you do move them just to find the comfort zone once again...

vipassana does teach that you should be aware of everything that is happening to your body, and just observe, so the more experienced meditators just observe their leg cramps(!) and other discomforts, and the discomforts eventually dissipate... and others arise and then fall, and so on.

one other technique i've learned there, was when super comfortable and dont want to fall asleep, is that instead of fully closing my eyes, i keep them just slightly open, so the light falls in throw the slits... this brings me to the reality that i am purposefully paying attention to my breathe, how it feels when it hits my upper lip, and how the breathing feels in my nose and how it feels down my throat... and so on, i go through and visualize each and every aspect of my body as i breathe... down to the circulation, and then to the biological pangs that your body naturally, in its organic living form, goes through... these sensations happen all the time, but we're never quiet enough or calm enough to ever really experience them.

its amazingly just how aLIVE our bodies are when our minds stop thinking for those moments, and just be with our selves.

Thanks for the info ladies! I'll be Googling shortly! :) I'm looking forward to getting started. My resolution this year is to take better care of my health!!!

By the way, yesterday I had a day off from work and caught Montel! I'm definitely picking up his book tomorrow. I know I need to have more fruits and veggies in my diet, and help getting my son to have more. (He likes them, but still isn't eating as many as he should.) I know I will feel much better doing this! Emme, I'm so glad you, Montel and the other experts did this show to inform us all on how to be healthier!

Dorothy, you did a 10 day retreat? That must have been wonderful! Maybe someday...for now, one day at a time!

Hi ladies! I found a website...practical yoga (www.practicalyoga.tv) which so far is very helpful. There are video clips to watch and some instructions you can print out.

I missed my day yesterday but got on my pillows, thanks dorothy on the suggetion...instead of one buckwheat pillow to sit on, I know have two that made all the difference. A smidge of leg tingles but I am now letting it be and moving on with the flow. I had an interesting time getting into it as i had a lot of thoughts running through my mind. I had lots of energy flowing and from one moment to another I was cold then very warm. Our bodies are incredible. Once I got to where the thoughts were lessening, my alarm rang. I hate it when that happens! I will look up vipassana today. I think mediating with others would be incredible. I'm reading Eat Pray Love right now and am in the India part of the book. I am laughing alot and love that she describes the process so well.

I am having such a nice time reading Eat Pray Love at the same time I am learning how to meditate. I laugh out loud as she gets frustrated, cries out of desparation and eventually arrives at a breakthrough. A great 35 mintues this morning...really sets the tone for the whole day. Any adventurous souls giving this a try?

I started to, but put it on hold while I had the stomach flu. It's time for me to get back on track again! I finally have enough strength to exercise again...Yeah!

I'm going to have to check out Eat Pray Love!!!

While I was on my train ride back from QVC, I thought I'd try meditation out (they say you can do this anywhere). Well, I marked the time I started and my girlfriend Jodie said,"ok, Emme we're at Penn Station". An hour went by as if it were 10 minutes. Now that was amazing.

Hi Emme -

My first post on your site. Congratulations on achieving peace and discipline through Meditation. I've tried it sporadically and am currently doing a chanting practice for 20 minutes each morning. You're inspiring me, however, to give meditating another try. The Sun salutations are a nice way to open the day, as are the candles. (I go through white votives like water) and when I'm feeling especially ceremonious, I add my favorite rose-scented incense to the mix.

There's a company based in the midwest (Idaho, I think) called Prasad. Their Celestial Rose is absolutely divine and seems to noticeably transform the energy of a room.

One thing I'm unclear on: do you sit cross-legged on your pillows? You said you cross your legs, but not in a way where one leg lies atop the other. How are you doing this?

Thanks! Stacey

Hey Stacey... So good to hear about the rose scented incense...thanks. I use candles that you see in the grocery store that is typically used for memorials. They last a long time and are enclosed with the glass so I dont have to worry. I have used three of them for 3 months and not replaced them yet...close but not yet. Ok, I sit on my round buckwheat pillows a little toward the front and have my legs crossed infront of the pillows (not on the pillows). I like having my back be straight and hips slightly tilted forward. When I cross my legs, sometimes I lift one foot ontop of the other and other times I sit in a regular leg cross. ("criss cross applesauce")

As always I am amazing at the practise and what it give you.

I was amazingly itchy last week and had to force myself to sit still. Three days prior I had such insight in my life that I know I have changed as a person. Today I was waiting for my mind to clear for 30 minutes and it had to be when my alarm went off to end that I took an extra 10 minutes where I found my space and got what i wanted. Different every time and not always what we expect. In fact I would suggest leave all expectations at the door and let yourself be. In doing that you are open for inspiration and all the wonder that has in store for you. I hope this helps...

How is everyone doing with their practice? I find I need to sit and allow my mind to rest everyday. So nice to know I can "go there" and get a personal peace that nothing can compare. I am working on allowing the time in the morning and not oversleeping...
