I will never forget when I went out to a major business lunch with the founder of a TV conglomerate.
We all ordered steaks and baked potatos with all the trimmings. He was at the head of the table and doing a great job keeping the conversation going until his food arrived. I swear I am not stretching the truth that I thought I was with a caveman. Food was flying, elbows waving and I had to do everything to not start laughing outloud, hysterically.
I kept wondering if we were being televised or not and tried to keep it together but since then, I have never ever seen anything like it. Truly a sight that still gives me the giggles.
Now, I know if he was just starting out and was trying to impress others he would clearly not at the table we were at.
I just cant imagine him climbing the ranks and not getting a manners book as a present.

Do manners count?

I think manners count. I also think society's manners over the last decade have taken a nose dive. People don't say excuse me when they want to get by, they just push their way through; they don't say thank you (it's usually "there you go"); they seldom hold doors open. I find it frustrating. I grew up with an Aunt who would mortify me if I forgot my manners.

It really peeves me when I call my kids into the other room for something and they say "Huh?" or "what?" I do stress manners to my kids, including when they talk to adults (especially the elderly) and they mumble. I get so irritated because I feel it's rude. I'm making all of my kids take speech in high school (I have 3 older step kids that I claim as my own, so I've only had a year to work on them so far) because I think being able to verbally express yourself is important. Eating in restaurants is almost like Emme said, entertainment, watching people with a total lack of table manners. I do not see how people make it very far in life without manners. they are extremely important.
