Looking for a few Real Women

Babs Lucas is looking for a few real women. And she’s enlisting the help of some of Vancouver’s finest merchants to find them.

Vancouver, March 8, 2007 – Babs Studio Boutique and a handful of esteemed sponsors are celebrating International Women’s Day by announcing a Vancouver first – a model contest geared to finding a representative body for each of the four basic women’s body shapes. Four lucky winners will be selected to represent the pear, apple, athletic, and hourglass shapes that will inform the design and fit of Babs’ upcoming collections.

“The time has come for the fashion industry to recognize and celebrate a wider range of shapes and sizes,” says Lucas. “With this contest, I hope to encourage Canadian women to embrace the shape Mother Nature gave them, and empower themselves to represent real women. Inspired by projects like Dove’s Campaign for Real Beauty, I hope to emerge as a true leader in the fashion apparel dimension of this extremely important cause.”

Prizes for the contest are set to include exclusive interviews with model and talent agency Pizzazz International, professional photo shoots courtesy of Douglas Buchan photography, cosmetics from Merle Norman, and gift certificates from legendary Granville Rise retailers Diane’s Lingerie and Lord’s.

Early registrants will have an opportunity to strut their model stuff in a ‘ladies who lunch’ event at the distinguished Pan Pacific, pampered, styled and perfectly fitted in Babs’ spring collection. Winners will be decided online at www.babs.ca by popular vote.

Prospective entrants should know that there is literally no model industry in Vancouver, so unfortunately the prize of "interviews" with Pizzazz International are not likely to launch a modeling career!

Otherwise, we wish Babs well in her efforts to extend size options in Vancouver!!

It is always a shot in the dark with talent and model agencies, but Pizzazz does have a division devoted to full figure models, and is internationally based ...

The big deal here is not so much the promise of a career in modeling as it is the equal opportunity to have a crack at the interview experience.

Of course, it would be nice to discover the next full figure sensation ... but what we're hoping for is to encourage confidence and celebration of as many body shapes and sizes as we can.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Thank you for all of your posts. Even though I don't live near Canada, I would very much love to see your store and meet you sometime. I have much admiration and respect for your desire to show all women of all sizes and shapes can dress and feel beautiful. Thank you.
