I’m a banker’s daughter, so I’ve had to balance my checkbook since I was five years old. My sister and I had savings accounts when we were little to teach us about saving money and being able to financially take care of ourselves. I never felt like I needed to depend on anybody. I had a checking account by the time I was a teenager to teach me slowly how to manage my own money. Sometimes I’d put money right in the piggy bank-sometimes I went to the mall with it. That was okay, too.

I work in a very unpredictable industry. Some years are great financially and then there are also the lean years. The banker’s daughter in me made me a very conservative spender. I always ask my accountant and my business manager when I want to buy something. It’s good. I’m thirty-seven years old. I’m probably not going to be on a tour bus at eighty years old singing, “She’s in Love with that Boy,” so I save for my future.

A woman learning how to take care of her money is not a feminist idea; it’s just a practical idea. So what if you meet Prince Charming and he takes care of everything.

I know some women whose husbands took care of everything and when their husbands passed away, they didn’t know how to write a check! In my sister’s family, all the credit cards are in her husband’s name and she learned a few years ago that she didn’t have any credit! What if she needed it? Here she was, a grown woman with good money and no debt, and she had to work really hard to get a credit card!

Serenity

My surefire, guaranteed-to-work, absolutely best prescription for de-stressing is swimming with wild dolphins off the Kona coast in Hawaii. Sure, it takes some planning and not a small amount of cash, but if you have the opportunity, jump at it. Being in the presence of something that heartbreakingly pure, beautiful, and free could change your life.
